What is that threaded barrel?

Today I found a "twisted" barrel with the precise diameter (6,04mm?) for airsoft replicas in the SpecShop -- my second favorite ASG and favorite military-survival retailer. I wonder how they work, i.e. what are they threaded for. I think that the rotation in the axis parallel to the trajectory will not affect the ability to hit with the BB. The BBs don't turn left nor right, unless there's a wind blowing.
